Some sad news concerning the passing of local musician Alan Poyner who was an early participant in Birmingham's 1960s music scene. Alan played guitar as a member of "Johnny Starr and The Planets" who developed into "Billy King and The Nightriders" and later Mike Sheridan and The Nightriders. In his later years, Alan ran the APEX REHEARSAL STUDIOS in Halesowen. Alan's brother Dennis has requested this news be shown on Alex's Pie Stand (see the following below):
I wish to inform you of the passing of my Brother, Alan Poyner. Alan formed the group known as 'The Planets' which was the springboard for Mike Sheridan and The Night Riders'. He was friends with most of the group members over the years, his best friend being "Big Al" (Johnson). He spent most of his life doing one thing or another in the music industry, it was the love of his life.
Caring for many years of his life for his wife Hazel, Alan still found time for his passion - music. Since the early 90s up until his death, he ran his own rehearsal studio's in Halesowen called "Apex Studios" where he was loved by all who rehearsed there. His death was sudden just as he was in the process of turning a spare room into a venue where his customers could play to live audiences to help them with their confidence etc. He was always there to help any budding musician. I know some of the musicians he knew would like to know of his passing.
Regards - Dennis Poyner
